Wedding Insurance: Debenhams' new name kit offer

Thursday, 21 February 2008 12:00

Debenhams Wedding Insurance is offering women getting down on one knee on February 29th help when it comes to changing their names.

Women taking advantage of the Leap Year tradition by proposing on the last day of February and buying wedding insurance will receive a free New Name Kit from the Name Change Company worth £24.99.

The kit provides forms and letters needed to be sent out when changing your name and a list of who needs to be notified.

"In the UK, women have the option to decide whether they will take their husbands' surname or keep their maiden name," said Debenhams Wedding Insurance spokeswoman Diane Jackson.

"And opting for the latter can add to the stress of organising the wedding and honeymoon as women will need to contact up to 40 organisations - and this can be a difficult and drawn-out process."

Debenhams Wedding Insurance can cover wedding costs up to £70,000 - with policies starting at £55 for lower cover of £9,000.

The Leap Day tradition dates back to 1288 when women were officially allowed, under Scottish law, to ask for a man's hand in marriage. Those turned down were allowed to claim compensation ranging from a kiss to a silk gown.
