M&S warns of rise in pet poisoning

M&S Money is promoting its pet insurance policies following increasing numbers of reports of animal poisonings.

According to 24-hour pet advice line Vetfone, there has been a 34 per cent year-on-year rise in potentially fatal poisonings.

Owners are being urged not to leave medication, especially nicotine-based products such as patched and chewing gum, within easy access of pets as they are often the cause of the problems.

M&S Money said taking out its pet insurance policy will allow owners free use of Vetfone, which can give advice in case pets do happen across a potentially lethal substance.

Signs a pet may have suffered the effects of poisoning include tremors, weakness, depression or vomiting.

Judith Roberts, M&S Money Insurance Manager, said: "Anyone who suspects that their pet has swallowed household medication should first try and identify what's been eaten, by recovering packaging such as blister packs or boxes. Then seek immediate veterinary advice.

"M&S Pet Insurance policyholders can rest assured that a qualified veterinary expert is available round the clock to provide advice and answer questions should a pet become unwell."

As well as access to Vetfone, M&S Pet Insurance features cover of up to £7,000 a year in vets fees, a 15 per cent discount for customers who apply online and a five per cent multi pet discount.
