Legal & General: Home insurance safety guide

Tuesday, 16 December 2008 12:00

Legal & General has prepared a guide to help homeowners safeguard their property to help lessen the chances of claiming on their insurance policies.

The insurer has published the information after it uncovered worrying evidence that people are installing home security features, but not checking they work or replacing faulty systems.

While nearly 90 per cent of people own smoke alarms, 85 per cent have invested in window locks and 72 per cent boast good quality door locks, 37 per cent of those are putting off maintaining these features.

As well as launching the guide, which includes tips and explains security features, Legal & General is also reminding homeowners its household buildings insurance cover includes home emergency cover as standard.

This means, if they experience a problem such as a burst pipe customers can call an approved tradesperson to undertake the emergency repair, up to the value of £150.

Ruth Wilkins, a spokeswoman for Legal & General, said: "If people are not checking their safety and security measures, they may not be as safe as they think.

"A few simple checks could mean that our properties are safer and so prevent the need to make a claim under a household insurance policy."
