No insurance payout for Carol

If Carol Thatcher is hoping for a payout from income protection or payment protection insurance after being dropped from the One Show, she will be disappointed, according to experts.

The daughter of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher and I'm a Celebrity. star has lost her job on the BBC show after referring to a tennis player as a "golliwog" backstage.

Ms Thatcher joins the ranks of the unemployed but would not be entitled to make a claim if she had taken out a policy, Matt Morris from Lifesearch said.

"You would have to be made redundant," Mr Morris said.

"It would have to be an accident, sickness or redundancy - being sacked for something like this wouldn't count."

Kelly Ostler-Coyle from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said insurance in this case would not pay out because it is "a situation that you are putting yourself in".

"Insurance is for events that are unexpected. It's the same as if you went out and left all the doors in your home open and you got burgled," Ms Ostler-Coyle added.

According to the ABI, unemployment claims on payment protection insurance (PPI) rose to 19,105 in November 2008, up from 8,772 in November 2007 - an increase of 118 per cent.
