Tesco is knocking 35 per cent off pet insurance for new customers who apply for a policy online.

The insurer is offering the deal as it unveils research which reveals the extent to which pet owners consider their animal to be part of their family.

Its survey found more than three quarters of women talk to their pets as if it were a person and a third prefer the animal's company to that of other humans.

In fact women seem to be more attached to their pet than men. A third of female pet owners considered their pet to be their best friend, compared t o 20 per cent of men.

Rachel Cutler, head of Tesco pet insurance, said: "Owning a pet can be a very rewarding experience - many people consider their dog or cat to be part of the family and even their best friend.

"We also understand that it can be a costly experience. To enable pet owners to manage their costs of their pet insurance our policies start from £4.50 a month for cats and £8 for dogs."
