Two car insurance policies?

A reader from London wants to know if he can have two car insurance policies.

Emma Holyer, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from LV= Insurance, tackles the issue.

Umong from Harrow asks:

Can a driver that holds a full UK licence have two separate policies with two separate companies on one car?

Emma replies:

You could take our two policies on the same car but it would be a bit pointless and cost you twice as much.

For example, if you have an accident only one insurer can repair the car and if you are involved in an accident in which your car is written off your insurer will want to collect the salvage and log book - of which you will only have one set of.

Furthermore some insurers will have a clause in their policy that says they won't pay out if you have another policy in place on the car so you could be left without cover at all.
