Saga buoyant about boat insurance

Saga is urging boat owners to take out insurance as new research shows theft claims for private vessels were set to go up this summer.

The insurer, which provides insurance for most types of boats, said 68 per cent of theft claims were likely to happen when crafts were moored for the summer months.

Its internal research showed the most common item stolen from boats was outboards, which usually had an average claim amount of £800.

Onboard equipment, the second most common item stolen, was setting the insurer back £1,400 on average.

With sailing being one of the favourite pastimes for the over-50s, Saga is also warning customers to be vigilant at so-called boat jumbles where cut-price equipment goes on sale, but where unscrupulous traders can be found selling goods.

Saga said its boat insurance policy provided extensive cover for yachts, motor boats, sports boats, sports cruisers, dinghies, narrowboats and sailboards.
