Tesco's insurance products will now be underwritten by Fortis after a new partnership was struck between the two firms.

The move, Tesco said, would mean millions of UK motorists and householders would benefit as it introduced better products, keener prices and high levels of service.

For Fortis, the union means opening the door to an extra 1.5 million motor and household customers, which will make it the second largest car insurer in the UK.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: "The partnership with give Tesco responsibility for retail pricing, sales and marketing, customer service and new product development providing greater control of the insurance products sold under the Tesco brand.

"Fortis will use its considerable expertise to provide underwriting and claims management."
