Temporary accident cover and an exclusions discount are among the new features of Aviva's newly improved Income Protection insurance plan.

Customers can now take advantage of up to 90 days' accident cover while the policy is being underwritten, thanks to the enhancement.

And their premiums are now discounted if they have exclusions for mental health or spinal conditions.

Kevin Murdoch, senior propositions development manager at Aviva UK Health, said: "Our innovative protection promise means that customers now have the peace of mind that they are protected if they have an accident while the policy is being underwritten."

Aviva has also announced, as part of the revamp, intermediaries selling the policy to clients will now receive a 150 per cent initial commission, an increase on the previous 130 per cent.
