The importance of home insurance during the cold, dark winter months is being highlighted by price comparison website, Confused.com.
As the clocks go back it has warned the darker evenings can provide cover for opportunities thieves and is urging people to shop around for the best policy at the right price.
The comparison site has also advised people to take precautions to prevent not only financial loss, but the emotional cost of theft.
Darren Black, head of home insurance at Confused.com, said: "Whilst home insurance will cover homeowners financially, it cannot account for the loss of items with sentimental value.
"For that reason, people need to take steps which will deter any would-be thieves in the area."
It urged people not to leave their belongings on display - through unscreened windows, for example - and suggested security was tightened by checking locks and installing burglar alarms.
However, Confused said it was essential to check the limit of items on your insurance policy to make sure they reflected the cost of your belongings.
Keeping receipts would also help speed up a claim if the worst did happen, Confused said, as would taking photographs of expensive possessions.
