Insurewithease: Swine flu and travel insurance

Wednesday, 04 November 2009 12:00

Insurewithease is urging winter travellers to check the terms of their travel insurance to ensure they are covered in case they catch swine flu.

The insurer said those with pre-existing medical conditions should be particularly aware of the details of their policy in case they have to abandon their holiday because of infection from the virus.

Paul Byrne, chief executive of Insurewithease, said: "Swine flu is a very real concern for travellers, especially as winter is expected to see an increase in cases.

"But as an industry we've not made it particularly easy for policyholders to know what to do as each travel insurance company has its own policy and conditions for making a claim."

Insurewithease said if any of its policyholders should fall sick with the illness before travelling they should first contact the insurer to log their abandoned trip.

They should then contact their GP to request a sick note. If they cannot get to the GP, they should go to the NHS website or hotline and request a reference number to obtain medication.

Once the medication has run its course, they should write to Insurewithease enclosing the completed medication course to make a claim.
