PruProtect has launched a new online life cover policy which includes serious illness protection.

The new version of the Essentials product, created in a joint venture between Prudential and South African financial services firm Discovery, is available via UK intermediaries.

According to PruProtect, some of the features it originally had have been removed to make premiums more affordable.

Among the items being dropped are automatic children's cover, guaranteed insurability options and immediate cover.

Deepak Jobanputra, of PruProtect, said: "We have launched this latest product to provide greater choice and flexibility.

"Our philosophy is based upon innovation, choice and comprehensiveness of cover and we have remained true to our core values."
