Direct Line is offering £15,000 of free accidental death cover to customers taking out its life insurance policy.

The insurer is issuing the deal in a bid to encourage more people to take out life cover, which it said was vital to make sure loved-ones were supported financially if the worst happened.

Paul Cowman, head of life insurance at Direct Line, said: "There really is no time like the present for people to be considering their options when it comes to life insurance.

"To some, life insurance seems like an unnecessary expense. But if you have people who depend on you and your income, you need it."

Direct Line offers both fixed term life cover and mortgage life cover.

The policies include a minimum sum insured of £30,000 for policyholders up to the age of 40, and £20,000 for over 40s. The maximum sum insured is £2 million.
