Esure: Travel insurance essential for skiers

Esure is urging winter sports enthusiasts to ensure they are amply covered for accidents on the slopes with a decent travel insurance policy.

The insurer is issuing the advice as it publishes new figures revealing a 50 per cent rise in the number of people planning to hit the ski slopes this year.

Yet, despite this surge, one in eight skiers and snowboarders won't take out travel insurance before they embark on their holiday, the research found.

And a worrying three per cent planned to rely solely on their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for cover.

Esure said an injury on the slopes could cost thousands of pounds in treatment and investing in a travel insurance policy was the only way to provide cover in this event.

Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, said: "Accidents do happen on the slopes and it's crucial to make sure you're fully covered with quality insurance that includes specific winter sports cover."

He also urged holidaymakers to check the small print in their insurance document for any exclusions, particularly for those planning to participate in any extreme sports.

"Call your insurer if you're not clear on what you're covered for otherwise you may have to foot a hefty medical bill if you were injured," Mr Pickard added.
