Millions 'have no protection against job loss'

Almost half the population would be left penniless in less than a month if they lost their income, a survey has found.

Despite rising unemployment figures, 45 per cent of Brits have not bought any form of protection cover, while just a third of the UK population has any financial provision in place to protect their mortgage.

Half of all adults (49 per cent) have less than £1,000 in savings and investments with three-quarters (72 per cent) saving less than £100 - leaving millions with just enough to survive for a month.

Iain Mallon, head of protection at AXA, said: "This is a serious issue for the UK public and one that needs to be addressed if people are going to be properly protected."

The survey also found those with more dependants are the least likely to have adequate financial cover in place should they die or be faced with a critical illness.

Just one in five (21 per cent) of those with five or more dependants feel they are adequately covered compared to 49 per cent of those with just two dependants.
