Brits dream of country home

The dream home for Brits is in the countryside, according to a survey, yet just four per cent of rural dwellers believe they live in their dream property.

Insurer Legal & General asked Brits about their current home and their dreams for the future, and found just 15 per cent currently live in their dream home.

This drops to just four per cent for people who live in the countryside.

But for those who are still looking for their dream home, 28 per cent believe the countryside is the perfect place to live.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's general insurance business, said: "There is a really interesting disconnect between where people say they want to live, and where people who are in their dream homes actually live.

"Whether people are lucky enough to be living in their perfect property or not, our home is usually our most precious possession. We'd encourage everyone to make sure they have the right household insurance to protect their property, whatever the style or location."

Almost three quarters of Brits, 73 per cent, are happy to stay in the UK to find their ideal property but Australia is the top choice for those hoping to settle further afield, with 20 per cent, followed by New Zealand, 13 per cent.

Last year, most Brits had their sights set on the USA, 17 per cent, and Spain, 15 per cent - but a crashing property market in both countries may have put buyers off.
