Cheaper insurance? Get on your bike

The Post Office is promoting its motorcycle insurance after research uncovered evidence drivers were swapping four wheels for two during the recession.

The fuel efficiency of a motorcycle or moped compared to a car was being cited by motorists as the main reason they would be happy to get on their bike.

But the fact bikes were nippier and easier to get around town in were also given as a major influence.

The Post Office found that up to 4.8 million, 13 per cent, of UK drivers would in fact be prepared to ditch their car in favour of a two-wheeled vehicle.

Richard Pennant-Jones, head of general insurance for the Post Office, said: "Using mopeds or motorcycles over the spring and summer can help reduce day-to-day transport and running costs, including insurance which would be significantly cheaper for motorcycles and mopeds than cars."

He said the Post Office Motorcycle Insurance offered a number of policy benefits including one month's free insurance.
