A reader from Liverpool has come across an old insurance policy book. He wants to find out if it could be worth anything.

Emma Holyer, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from LV= Insurance, tackles the issue.

Tony from Liverpool asks:

My father-in-law has passed away and we have found some policy books.

Were can I check if they are valid or not?

Emma replies:

There are various things you can do to find out if they are valid.

First of all try to contact the provider of the policy. They will be able to advise you.

However it may be that they have been purchased by another insurer or have changed their name in which case you should try the Unclaimed Assets Register (www.uar.co.uk) as they will be able to help find both the assets which you have identified but also check if there are any other policies in your father-in-laws name which you may not have details of.

Finally you could also try contacting the Financial Services Authority who should be able to advise you on what you can do. Their website is www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/

If you have a question for Emma, go to the myfinances.co.uk Ask the Insurance Expert section.

LV= Insurance - the Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society - is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
