Will my contents insurance cover possessions stolen elsewhere?

Thursday, 21 May 2009 05:23

A reader from Nottingham has had some possessions stolen, but they were in his brother's house, so he is unsure where to turn to claim on contents insurance.

Emma Holyer, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from LV= Insurance, tackles the issue.

Matthew from Nottingham asks:

Are my possessions covered on my contents insurance if they are stolen from my brother's house?

Emma replies:

Most contents insurance policies will have an element of insurance included called 'cover away from the home'.

This will cover your contents if they are temporarily in another private residence - for example at your brother's house.

You should check what level of cover your insurer provides as this is normally capped at around £5,000 on an average policy.

LV= Insurance - the Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society - is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
