Halifax: Home insurance hit by Wimbledon

Halifax Home Insurance is bracing itself for a rise in insurance claims for broken windows as Wimbledon tennis fever engulfs the nation.

According to the insurer claims for shattered windows and smashed glass increased last June by 34 per cent as the tennis tournament took off and encouraged people to play the sport.

Now Halifax is urging any budding tennis players, inspired by the on-court antics of this year's Wimbledon competitors, to take care near the home to avoid accidental damage.

The message is being broadcast with a special emphasis in Ipswich, which last year had the most claims for broken glass and windows during Wimbledon.

British number one Andy Murray seemed to provide a strong influence for people living in Stirling, Falkirk and Grangemouth - close to his hometown of Dunblane - as these areas had the second highest number of claims.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "We'd advise any budding Murrays or Sharapovas to take care when playing ball sports close to home, and check they are insured for accidental damage should a mishap occur."
