Main driver for car insurance but not registered keeper?

A reader from Scotland is unsure if a main driver and the registered keeper of a car must be one and the same for car insurance.

Emma Holyer, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from LV= Insurance, tackles the issue.

Ishbel from Greenock asks:

Can you insure a car and be main driver if you are not registered keeper?

Emma replies:

Some insurers will allow you and others won't.

The reason for this is to stop fraudulent 'fronting' of policies. This is when a young motorist purchases a car for their use but puts their parent down as the main driver to try and cut the cost of the cover.

If there is a genuine reason for the registered keeper not to be the main driver your insurer should be able to provide you with insurance although you may need to explain the unusual set up.

Otherwise speak to the DVLA and get the registered keeper changed.
