Where's my claims history?

A reader from Cambridgeshire is not sure how to get his claims history.

Emma Holyer, myfinances.co.uk insurance expert from LV= Insurance, tackles the issue.

Andrew from Peterborough asks:

How do I find my car insurance claims history?

Emma replies:

There is no one database which holds information on every individual and their claims history so there is no way that you can find out your personal claims history - but most people would be able to remember any accidents they had been involved in.

When you take out a policy your insurer will either ask for your proof of NCD (if you have any) or your claims history and who you were most recently insured with.

They will then potentially call up your previous insurer to check if you had any accidents which you hadn't declared.

If you are thinking about purchasing a car and are interested in checking if it has been involved in any serious accidents, has been stolen or has any outstanding finance on it you should do a HPI check. The check will only cost about £20 and will tell you if the car has been written off, stolen or a previous owner owes money on it. Try www.hpicheck.com
