LV=: Cash strapped Brits ditch holiday abroad

British holidaymakers are staying in the UK for their summer break, new research by travel insurance provider LV= has found.

Brits reckon they can save, on average, £247 per person by ditching their foreign travels and holidaying in the UK instead, the research found.

And this has led to 12 million people, 25 per cent of the population, taking their main holiday in the UK. Five million of these people said they were doing this because they simply could not afford to go elsewhere.

John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= travel insurance, said: "The current economic climate is impacting most people in some way and our research suggests that holiday abroad this year is something many families plan to postpone until at least next year, in a bid to watch the pennies."

Scotland proved the most popular UK destination, with 16 per cent of those questioned heading there for their holiday. Wales came second, with 12 per cent of the holiday vote and Cornwall proved to be the third most popular destination.
