UK parents welcome back grown children

A third of British parents over 50 have allowed their adult children to move back in, according to research.

Saga Home Insurance reported 78 per cent of parents once again cohabiting with their sons or daughters - known as 'boomerang' children - are happy to play host.

The group cites the financial crisis as a contributing factor the high prevalence of boomerang children whilst 17 per cent claim the return home followed a divorce or separation.

More people under one roof means increased costs such as electricity or utilities. Also adding on to the house to accommodate an extra person may not be covered by existing home and content insurance.

The data shows only a quarter of parents are asking their children for financial contributions.

"It is good to see that you can always depend on your parents in times of emotional and economic difficulty," said executive chairman of Saga, Andrew Goodsell.

"But don't forget the financial implications of moving home."
