M&S: Travel insurance for World Cup football fans

Thursday, 10 September 2009 12:00

M&S Money is urging football fans travelling to the World Cup finals to buy their travel insurance early to cover themselves for any cancellations.

The insurer's policy provides up to £6,000 cover for any irrecoverable unused travel and accommodation costs due to illness, a call up for jury service, redundancy, or if leave is withdrawn for customers working in the emergency services or Armed Forces.

Because of these circumstances, M&S said, many people often need to claim before their policy has begun.

And this makes it important not to organise travel insurance at the last minute, especially the many England football supporters already booking trips to South Africa to see the World Cup.

Steve Price, head of general insurance at M&S, said: "Tickets for the matches will no doubt be hot property, but fans should also think about what they would do if the worst happens.

"Travel insurance can provide financial support long before you step on the flight, so England fans would be wise to invest in a comprehensive policy now."
