M&S Money is providing unlimited cover for bikes as part of its Premier home contents insurance policies.
The insurer is promoting the feature of its policy to coincide with the time of the year when bike thefts are at their peak.
According to British Crime Survey figures thefts of cycles follow a season pattern with peaks beginning in May and soaring to 29 per cent above trend in September.
M&S suggested this could be because September is the start of the university term. A poll of 2,000 students conducted by the insurer showed 22 per cent of them have had their bikes stolen.
Steve Price, M&S's head of general insurance, said: "Bikes are a prime target for thieves and it's important to make sure you are insured in case your bike is stolen or damaged.
"Simple measures like leaving your bike in a well-lit area and using a good quality lock can deter a would-be thief."
M&S home contents insurance policyholders will receive unlimited cover for their possessions, and this includes bikes which are protected against damage or theft as part of the policy.
Policyholders can also choose to protect their bikes whilst away from the home.
