Halifax Home Insurance aids neighbour disputes

Wednesday, 30 September 2009 12:00

Halifax is reminding people experiencing problems with nuisance neighbours that its home insurance policy covers malicious damage as standard.

The insurer's buildings and contents policy also offers optional legal expenses as an additional cover

This could help homeowners pay for legal costs incurred in defending their rights following property damage, interference, boundary disputes or trespass, Halifax said.

According to research just published by Halifax, one in five homeowners has suffered serious problems with neighbours this year.

And while excessive noise was the most common nuisance, rude or intimidating behaviour had been experienced by 23 per cent of those questioned and hijacking of illegal boundaries had been suffered by 20 per cent.

A significant rise in illegal dumping of rubbish, Halifax said, was leading to damage to buildings and property.

It estimated that problems inflicted by neighbours cost Brits more than £3 billion last year.

For this reason, Halifax has decided to flag up its Home Insurance policy.
