M&S insures independent travellers

M&S is providing independent traveller cover as standard as part of its Premier multi-trip travel insurance policies.

The insurer is also offering this feature for those embarking on trips they have booked themselves as an optional extra on its single trip travel insurance.

The feature has been included as part of M&S's insurance package in a bid to help holidaymakers guard against travel company collapse.

If an airline or holiday company goes bust, travellers who have booked through a tour operator will be protected against financial loss.

Independent travellers, however, would not.

Yet, there has been a rise in numbers of people booking the separate components of the holiday themselves.

Steve Price, head of general insurance at M&S, said: "Whilst passengers booking flights as part of a package holiday enjoy protection in the event of airline collapse, travellers booking flights independently can often find themselves out of pocket.

"Traditional polices many not cover the increasing variety of eventualities faced by the modern traveller. The Independent Traveller cover provided by M&S has been designed to meet the changing needs of our customers."

Additional cover offered under the independent traveller feature includes delayed departure compensation, unused accommodation costs if the trip is cancelled and travel expenses if you are delayed.
