M&S home insurance goes 'green'

M&S is offering energy efficient and sustainable replacements to customers claiming through its home insurance packages.

In a bid to help claimants reduce their environmental impact it is offering customers who make claims for a fridge freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher a replacement which is A-rated for energy efficiency.

And customers making claims for a property which is so severely damaged it needs to be rebuilt, will have their new home built in line with the Code for Sustainable Homes.

This means sustainable materials will be used and attention paid to creating an energy-efficient property.

M&S said it was the first insurer to offer environmentally-friendly alternatives. It said most insurers usually replace lost or damaged possessions with their equivalent new items.

Nick Kidd, of Axa Insurance, which underwrites M&S's home insurance policy, said: "It is becoming increasingly common for companies to launch 'green' product on the basis of carbon offsetting facilities which our research suggests is not valued by customers.

"The M&S product goes significantly further by providing tangible environmental benefits which will help customers to save energy, save money and ultimately, to help save the planet."
