More Than urges skiers to get insured

More Than is urging skiers to ensure they have travel insurance as well as their European Health Insurance Certificate (EHIC) before heading for the peaks.

The insurer, which allows customers to apply for their travel insurance by phone or online, said many people think that just having an EHIC is enough to protect them whilst abroad.

However, it warned that failing to take out a policy could leave many holidaymakers - particularly skiers - unprotected. It used the example of a mountain rescue - a worst case scenario, but a costly one.

And it is urging skiers, even those with travel insurance, to take care and ensure the follow safety precautions.

Matt Pernet, head of travel at More Than, said: "It is important to get your travel insurance in place, as accidents can and do happen on the slopes.

"However, if you ski safely, on runs suited to your ability, you can help lower the risk of injury ruining your holiday.

It urges skiers to use a qualified guide if skiing or snowboarding off-piste, as many travel policies will not cover you without one.

New skiers should take professional lessons and anyone embarking on this kind of holiday should ensure their fitness levels are up to scratch before hand, More Than said.

It also advises anyone who needs to make a claim involving medical or hospital treatment to contact their insurer immediately.
