Can you insure a car that is not registered in your name?

A reader from Dumfries wants to know if it is possible to insure a car not registered in their name.

Emma Banks, an insurance expert from LV, tackles the problem.

Stewart from Dumfries asks:

Can you insure a car that is not registered in your name

Emma replies:

Yes you can but, to a degree it will depend on the relationship of the registered keeper to you. For example often the registered keeper could be the spouse of the policyholder and this is fine. Other circumstances such as the policyholder being the parent and the car being registered to a son or daughter who has just started driving and is also being put on the policy as a named driver would be an indicator of 'fronting'.

This is where the parent insures the car in their name and adds their son or daughter as a named driver, even though they are the main driver. This is unlikely to be accepted as fronting is fraud and against the law.
