M&S offers 24-hour vet advice with pet insurance

M&S Money's pet insurance service is offering access to specialist vet nurses who can provide 24-hour advice to owners worried about their animal's health.

The insurer is promoting the feature to coincide with a warning it is issuing on the dangers lurking in our gardens which can cause illness amongst pets.

It said many plants, vegetables and fruit found commonly in UK gardens could pose a threat to household animals.

Daffodils, for example, can be lethal as they are toxic and can cause diarrhoea, vomiting and staggering if eaten by a dog.

Tomato plans and Rhubarb also contain toxins, M&S warns, and pear pips, onions, garlic, grapes and potato peelings can also be poisonous.

However, M&S pet insurance customers who fear their animal might have fallen foul to these dangers can call Vetfone, the 24-hour line operated by nurses, to seek advice.

Clare Scantlebury, of Vetfone, said: "No doubt dogs and their owners will be looking forward to the warmer months and getting out in the garden, but they need to be aware of the hidden dangers which can cause real problems.
