Home insurance 'may not cover unoccupied properties'

People in Britain have been urged to inform their home insurance provider if they plan to head abroad and leave their property unattended for 30 days.

According to moneysupermarket.com, many households will not be covered if they spend this period overseas and their residence is unoccupied.

The portal found many policies become invalid after this amount of time, but advised holidaymakers to check the small print of their deals to see how it would relate to them.

It added around 300,000 people may be affected by the process.

Julie Owens, head of home insurance at the website, warned vacationers could face "an unwelcome surprise" if they do not study their insurer's policy.
