Government 'should stop spiralling car insurance costs'

The government must explore plans to ensure the spiralling costs of car insurance are reduced, one industry organisation has claimed.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), those in power should take heed of an eight-step proposal that the institution has put forward.

In the report, Biba called for the introduction of 'signposting' for drivers, where people are pointed towards the relevant broker for their cover requirements - something it said would be particularly good for young or non-standard drivers.

Other points raised included a review of Pass Plus, a reassessment of the driving test and the regulation of comparison websites to meet appropriate standards.

It also asked the government to consider Continuous Insurance Enforcement, a scheme that makes it illegal to keep a vehicle and not get it covered or have it declared as being off-road.

Biba's head of corporate affairs Graeme Trudgill said these precautions would "help more people find insurance, meaning fewer are left uninsured and unprotected".

This news comes as moneysupermarket.com urged British motorists to be aware of what their current policy allows them to claim for.
