My mobile phone has been stolen: Am I covered?
A reader from London asks if he should contact the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) after his insurance company refused to pay out on a claim after his mobile phone was stolen.
Emma Banks, our insurance expert from LV, tackles the problem.
Mr Nathan Mooney asks:
My mobile phone was stolen from my kitchen table. The thief has come over my 8ft yard wall and through my unlocked kitchen door to steal the phone. My insurance company will not cover my claim as there was no forced entry? I have been told that the FOS consider the opening of a door as forced entry? Is this correct and if so should my claim be covered?
Emma relies:
It’s not clear if you were in the property at the time but generally most insurers would pay out in this scenario. Even if you were out, most insurers would pay out unless they had put on a security clause on your policy. This would be applicable if you lived in a particularly high risk area or had lots of valuables in the property but you would be aware of it if this were the case as its not something that would be in the small print. I’d advise contacting the FOS as it sounds as if you have a case.
