Over 100,000 mobiles 'dropped in the toilet' each year

A new survey shows that 101,000 mobile phones are dropped into the toilet each year - representing some eight per cent of mobile insurance claims.

This is according to research from price comparison site uSwitch.com, which found that over the past 12 months, more than one million people have made claims on their mobile insurance.

However, with just 11 per cent of claims relating to theft, crime does not appear to be the main culprit.

"Mobile phones may be getting smarter but their owners aren't. Accidents can happen, but such is our dependence on our mobiles that replacing them can be a seriously inconvenient, not to mention costly, exercise," comments communications expert at the site Ernest Doku.

The biggest reason for making a claim was simply phones falling out of pockets, which accounted for 15 per cent of insurance requests.

Dropping handsets on the floor was the second most popular cause, while letting it slip down the toilet came third, the survey found.

And with inflation climbing to four per cent this week, consumers could find that keeping their insurance premiums low is a more important exercise than ever before.
