Uninsured driving adds £30 to every premium
Driving uninsured is widespread in the UK, new research from moneysupermarket.com suggests - and adds £30 pounds per year to every car insurance policy.
The price comparison site has revealed that one in six motorists has gotten behind the wheel of a vehicle they are not insured to drive.
Seven per cent of people drove their own car without cover, while a further seven per cent were in control of someone else's vehicle, despite not having the necessary insurance.
Some 27 per cent of motorists who admitted to driving without insurance claimed they were unaware that it is illegal to do so.
Meanwhile, 38 per cent said that being between policies was their reason for driving without cover.
"Uninsured drivers cost the industry £500 million each year, which as a result adds an average of £30 to every motorist's premium," comments Peter Harrison, head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com.
Recently, the European Court of Justice ruled that gender can no longer be taken into account when it comes to car insurance prices - something that will come into effect in December 2012.
