Direct Line research may act as car insurance reminder

Thursday, 14 April 2011 04:06

A reminder of the importance of car insurance has been issued by Direct Line.

Research conducted by the firm revealed one in ten drivers - 3.3 million - have encountered someone without insurance when involved in a collision.

Four per cent of such crashes result in the death of a person, while 25 per cent caused an injury.

In addition to this, the person without the appropriate documentation left the scene 17 per cent of the time and 32 per cent of those who did stop claimed they were covered.

Direct Line car insurance's director of motor underwriting Andy Goldby stated harsher penalties are required for uninsured drivers.

"Whilst uninsured drivers cost every honest motorist £30 a year, the real cost is the devastation they cause to other road users' lives," he said.

Campaigns director at Brake Julie Townsend added such individuals are breaking the law and harming other people and welcomed the news the Motor Insurers' Bureau will work with the DVLA to identify uninsured vehicles.
