ABI issue guide to choosing the best travel insurance policy
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has launched a consumer guide on travel insurance to aid consumers in choosing the right type of policy for their holidays during the summer.
The ABI’s guide attempts to clarify what is usually covered in standard travel insurance policies and also to advise on what is not covered. 15 million of us will go on holiday abroad this year and to counter against the possible difficulties and costs involved with parts of the holiday that can go wrong such as cancelled flights, lost baggage and medical expenses, holiday-makers need to have the right level of cover says the ABI.
Nick Starling, the ABI's Director of General Insurance and Health, said: “This guide points out what standard travel insurance policies will cover and why it is needed. Hopefully when consumers plan their next trip abroad this guide will help them choose the right policy."
The ABI says that the top three points that travellers need to think about when choosing a travel insurance policy are:-
- Choose the policy that covers your individual risk effectively not necessarily the cheapest one.
- Disclose all relevant medical conditions so that the insurer can be sure that you will have the correct cover from your policy or can decide if you need a tailored travel insurance policy.
- Do not do anything on holiday that you wouldn’t do at home. Drink or drug-related incidents and leaving valuables unattended can invalidate a claim.
Rochelle Turner, Head of Research at Which? Travel said: “Which? Travel research shows that, in the last year, 10 per cent of people were disappointed to find that they couldn't make a claim against the policy they had purchased. The work that the ABI have been doing will help in the move to clarify what insurance does and doesn't cover so people are better informed and can buy policies that are right for their travel needs."
