Car modifications 'can rapidly raise insurance premiums'

Drivers have been warned their car insurance premiums could be doubled if their vehicles have been fitted with modifications.

Research conducted by moneysupermarket.com indicated that a full body kit can raise costs by 101 per cent, while alloy wheels may cause the price to swell by 62 per cent.

The website advised motorists may find steps such as upping the excess they are willing to pay in the event of a claim could save them money.

Car insurance expert for the company Peter Harrison stated those who do wish to make alterations to their car should shop around for a better insurance deal and ensure they are fully covered.

"It is worse if motorists make any substantial changes to their car and fail to inform their insurer, as they risk invalidating their insurance completely," he warned.

Mr Harrison added individuals looking to save money may like to weigh up whether a modification is worth the additional expense.
