Aviva warns holidaymakers on home security

Aviva has warned British holidaymakers to make sure their homes are secure this summer, after its latest figures revealed burglaries increase every summer by ten per cent.

According to ten years of data collected by the insurance giant, July and August consistently see a spike in the number of thefts from inside the home, while actual damage caused to the fabric of properties during burglaries falls.

These numbers suggest that thieves are taking advantage of a basic lack of security in many homes and make having the right cover in place extremely important, the company stated.

Jonathan Cracknell, household underwriter at Aviva, said: "Most homeowners are pretty savvy when it comes to securing their main home while they are away on holiday, but our data shows that thieves are still sneaking in through open windows and unsecured doors, so even if you are just going out for a day trip, don't forget to have a quick look around and check you have shut and locked everything you should."

Aviva home insurance provides full cover for up to 60 consecutive days while a home is left unoccupied.
