HMRC launches helpline for riot victims

A new riot helpline has been launched by HM Revenue & Customs to support businesses and individuals affected by the recent rioting
The single point of contact is aimed at anyone affected by the civil disorder and widespread looting , which spread from London earlier this week and has affected cities including Manchester, Wolverhampton, Liverpool and Birmingham.
A spokesperson for HMRC said the department is determined to do everything it can to help riot victims.
The dedicated Civil Disorder helpline aims to provide comprehensive advice to business owners and individuals, while at the same time being sympathetic to their plight.
It will allow people to negotiate payment schedules - particularly for those who are unable to meet their tax bills in the short-term as a result of the rioting.
The helpline will also offer advice on what to do if HMRC paperwork was destroyed or lost during the looting.
"In these circumstances, and whenever possible, HMRC will review any penalties imposed and withhold additional surcharges that would normally be triggered by missed deadlines," the department stated.
The announcement follows reassurance for victims from prime minister David Cameron, who claimed that businesses without insurance cover who suffered at the hands of the rioters will be offered support through the Riot Damages Act.
Meanwhile, the British Retail Consortium has welcomed Whitehall's move to offer shops affected by the rioting a temporary reprieve when it comes to paying their business rates.
The organisation said: "The government has shown great willingness to work with retailers to put our streets back together."
