Does home insurance cover me for problems with my roof?

Vanessa Chance, an insurance expert from LV=, answers the question:-
Lynsey Foster from Carlisle asks:-
The plaster on my ceiling recently started falling off. I had my roof assessed by a local company who stated I need the full rear end of my roof replaced. I was informed the insulation and slates used by the previous owner were of a poor standard and this coupled with the adverse weather conditions of last winter would have resulted in the significant damage. Will I be covered by my house insurance?
Vanessa answers:-
It is very unlikely that you will be able to claim on your home insurance for the repairs due to the cause of the damage. Most insurers do not pay for damage caused by poor workmanship and will list this as an exclusion on your home insurance policy documents. Likewise, most insurers will not pay for damage caused by exposure to bad weather over a long period of time as this is down to wear and tear and is the responsibility of the home owner.
