Winter tyres should not be an issue for insurers - the AA

Friday, 07 October 2011 01:13

Drivers fitting winter tyres to their cars in the coming months should not need to inform their insurer, according to the AA.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said there was some confusion during last year's particularly cold weather, with some companies describing winter tyres as a 'modification' that warranted an increased premium or withdrawal of cover.

However, provided the winter tyres meet the car manufacturer's specifications and are fitted professionally, there should be no need to inform an insurer, Mr Douglas remarked.

"It is ludicrous for an insurer to penalise a driver for fitting winter tyres, given that doing so both underlines a responsible approach to safety by the driver as well as reducing the likelihood of a collision," he stated.

Mr Douglas added: "But if you do tell your insurer, there should be no change to your insurance premium."
