Over 11m Brits do not have home insurance - Post Office

Monday, 24 October 2011 04:02

More than 11 million Britons do not have home contents insurance, with more than four million admitting they would only get it after they had been burgled.

That is according to the latest data from the Post Office, which found 23 per cent of the UK population have not taken out a home contents policy.

A third of those without insurance went on to reveal that they would only buy insurance in the event of a burglary at their home, while a fifth said a family or friend being broken into would have the same effect.

Meanwhile, a quarter of respondents without cover said insurance may be too costly, with one in five stating they don't need it and one in ten describing it is a waste of money.

Post Office head of home insurance Gerry Barrett said: "Anyone who waits until they or someone they know is burgled is playing a game of chance with their possessions. It's not just opportunistic burglars that people need to protect your valuables from, but also hazards such as fires, floods or other accidental damage."
