Direct Line offers flood guidance for at-risk households

Heavy rainfall in recent days has increased the risk of flooding, but insurance specialist Direct Line has revealed its top tips for preventing water damage to help householders this autumn.

It described ensuring rains and gutters are clear of debris so rainfall can drain from a property effectively as a key technique, alongside placing electrical items in high cupboards to reduce the impact of any flood damage.

Making sure outdoor furniture and other items likely to float away are secured is another, as is establishing an evacuation plan in the event of flooding to reduce the risk of injury.

If flooding occurs, Direct Line revealed it will deploy its emergency teams to the affected areas to help cope with damage, as well as authorise repairs and alternative accommodation where necessary.

Stuart Curson, head of Direct Line home insurance, remarked: "We are keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts across the UK, so that we can be ready to assist any customers who may need our help.

"We have added extra members of staff to help cope with an anticipated increase in the number of calls from our customers."
