Aviva urges motorists to get winter-ready

Tuesday, 29 November 2011 03:06

Insurance provider Aviva has urged motorists to prepare for what could be another cold winter by adding snow tyres to their vehicles.

Nigel Bartram, Aviva's senior motor underwriter, said many drivers do not consider doing this, even thought it could make a significant difference to their safety in icy and snowy conditions.

He explained that although they are not a magic bullet, winter tyres will give better grip than standard versions.

"We believe winter tyres should be considered seriously as they're not just for snow and ice but for temperatures below seven degrees celsius," Mr Bartram added.

Winter tyres do not count as a modification under insurance rules and it is not necessary to inform the cover provider if they are fitted.

A recent poll by Manheim Auctions discovered that only five per cent of drivers intend to buy snow tyres in the coming weeks, while just 21 per cent carry a shovel in their vehicle during the colder months.
