Sainsbury's research finds motorists clueless about winter driving

New research from Sainsbury's suggests motorists could be risking accidents because they do not know enough about winter driving.

It discovered that 13.7 million people would not know what to do if their car went into a spin, while 27 per cent would do something that could make the situation worse.

With 1.3 million people having had an accident on icy roads in the past five years, it is thought that 264,000 more may happen this year.

Some 22 per cent of road users said they only drive in an emergency when there is ice, while a cautious seven per cent do not go out at all.

Those in London are the most reluctant to go out in snow, while their counterparts in the West Midlands and Wales are the bravest.

Head of Sainsbury's car insurance Ben Tyte said: "We would encourage all drivers to make sure they know the correct way to handle their vehicle in slippery conditions."

This week, TyreSafe urged car owners to fit winter tyres sooner rather than later to help them deal with slippery surfaces.
