1.6m drivers 'could be fined for expired photo card licences'

More than a million motorists could be at risk of a £1,000 financial penalty because they have allowed their photo card driving licence to expire.
This is the warning from Sainsbury's car insurance, which discovered from a Freedom of Information request that there are 1.6 million drivers who have not renewed their likeness on the permit in the past ten years as necessary under British law.
Furthermore, another three million licences will go out of date by the end of 2012.
Sainsbury's found that only 30 per cent of people with an expired licence are aware of it, while 14 per cent of expired photo cards have been out of date since 2009 or before.
Ben Tyte, head of Sainsbury's car insurance, urged everyone to check their expiry dates to avoid a potential fine from the police.
"Drivers should also remember that their photo card licence serves as more than just a driving licence," he added.
Last month, Sainsbury's announced that new car insurance customers will benefit from free breakdown cover until April 9th 2012.
