Motorists in Britain 'fearful of car crime'

Despite evidence to show that car crime in the UK has decreased in recent years, Britons are still concerned they will have their vehicles stolen or broken into.

This is according to new research from insurer Admiral, which found 74 per cent of drivers regularly worry about the issue.

The East Midlands and Yorkshire have the most nervy vehicle owners, as 80 per cent are concerned about car crime.

However, their Scottish counterparts were found to be the most relaxed about the possibility of this occurring.

Despite their fears, Admiral found that only 0.16 per cent of its customers suffered from car theft in 2011, down from 0.54 per cent in 2001, while 0.61 per cent were the victims of break-ins.

Admiral's Dave Halliday said: "This anxiety could be linked to a general sense of unease about the state of the country and the economy in particular; our cars are, after all, one of the most valuable things we own."

Launched in 1993, Admiral is the only insurer to offer a multi-car policy for households with more than one vehicle.
